Online Safety

At Ashbourne Primary School, we are committed to keeping children safe and this includes online safety.

Pupils regularly use computing equipment as part of their learning. Pupils in all year groups receive training in their Computing lessons about how to keep themselves safe in the online world. These sessions are supplemented with age appropriate assemblies at various times throughout the year.

We can only be successful in keeping children safe online if we work with parents to ensure the e-Safety message is consistent. It is important that parents speak to their children about how they can keep safe and behave appropriately online.

Online Safety Assemblies 💻📱🎮

Children have weekly online safety assemblies.

PCSO Bradbury led a recent assembly for Years 1–6 focused on Online Safety and Digital Footprints in particular. Children discussed how anything shared online – such as messages, photos, or comments – can leave a lasting trace. They were encouraged to stop and think before clicking or sending images, especially remembering that images should never be shared without permission.

The assembly highlighted how choices made online now can affect future opportunities, including jobs in adulthood. Pupils explored examples of both positive and negative digital footprints and what respectful online behaviour looks like.

Children were reminded that from the age of 10, individuals are legally responsible for their actions, and we discussed the Computer Misuse Act (1990) in an age-appropriate way.

We also covered legal age requirements for apps, including:

WhatsApp – 13+      Snapchat – 13+         TikTok – 13+       Minecraft – 7+      Roblox – All ages

Pupils were shown where to find support if something online worries them and were encouraged to speak to a trusted adult.
