Science at Ashbourne Primary School

Science at Ashbourne Primary School encourages curiosity, develops inquisitive minds and fosters a fascination with how the world works.

At Ashbourne Primary, children learn and enjoy science through practical and investigative experiences. As they move through the year groups, pupils develop their ability to ask questions, make predictions, test their ideas and understand how changing variables affect outcomes. They are taught to use age-appropriate equipment and resources safely and accurately, from using magnifying glasses to explore habitats to investigating how different materials react to everyday substances such as acids and alkalis.

We ensure that all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs, are supported to access the science curriculum through adaptive teaching, targeted support and carefully planned questioning, enabling all children to achieve age-related expectations.

Learning in Context

We are fortunate to be ideally located to make the most of our natural environment, both within our school grounds and in the local area. A short walk to the local brook provides opportunities for children to explore water-based habitats and carry out fieldwork, including river flow studies.

These real-life experiences help to bring learning to life and deepen pupils’ understanding of the world around them.

Linked to Our Golden Threads

Our science curriculum supports our Golden Threads:

  • Language and Literacy – pupils develop scientific vocabulary and explain their thinking clearly
  • Resilience and Regulation – pupils learn to persevere, refine their ideas and learn from investigation outcomes
  • Belonging and Becoming – pupils work collaboratively, share ideas and develop confidence as scientists

Through our science curriculum, pupils develop:

  • A strong understanding of scientific knowledge and concepts
  • The ability to work scientifically and think critically
  • Confidence in using scientific language
  • Curiosity and a lifelong interest in the world around them

We provide a strong foundation for further learning in Key Stage 3 and beyond.
