Phonics in Year 1

Children thoroughly enjoy phonics and great progress can be seen rapidly! We have a Phonics session each day in Year 1. Please see below to see the sounds and words that we learn/revisit throughout the year.

Reading and Reading Awards

We have so much fun reading in Year 1! We love reading in school and share stories daily with the children. We also visit our school library once a week.
 

We aim to instill a love of reading in all children, and encourage children to read at least 5 times a week at home. Just 10 minutes a day will make a real difference to the progress that your child makes. If your child reads at least 5 times a week at home, they will receive a voucher for the Golden Box. Each week, a name is picked out to win a BRAND NEW BOOK to keep! Please record all reading in the reading records, to ensure that we can monitor your child’s reading.

Outdoor Learning

We are lucky enough to have one outdoor learning session each half term. Information will be posted on our ClassDojo page in advance! Our outdoor learning session this half term is TBC. 

Key Information 

  • School opens at 8:35am. The morning register will be completed by 8:40am. Pick-up time is at 3.10pm. Please drop off and collect your child from the side gate to the left of our school office/main doors.
  • PE will take place every Wednesday and Friday. PE kits will stay in school and be sent home at the end of each half term. Pleasure ensure PE kits are named.
  • We will visit the library regularly. Children can choose a book to bring home to share and to encourage reading for pleasure.
  • Please send in a healthy, morning snack for your child. This can either be a piece/pieces of fruit or vegetable.  Free fruit is provided for the children every afternoon.
