Peer Buddies

Supporting Positive Play and Relationships

At Ashbourne Primary School, we run a Peer Buddies programme to support positive play, friendships and inclusion during lunchtimes.

Pupils in Years 3 to 6 can apply to become Peer Buddies, supporting children across Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Pupils complete an application form outlining their strengths and reasons for applying. Successful applicants are selected and receive training to help them carry out their role effectively. Peer Buddies work on a rota system and are on duty once or twice a week.

Our Role

Peer Buddies play an important role in creating a friendly, safe and inclusive playground environment. They act as positive role models and help to ensure that all children feel supported and included.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Being friendly and approachable
  • Supporting younger children and helping them to build friendships
  • Listening to others and offering support
  • Helping to resolve minor friendship issues and knowing when to seek adult help
  • Organising and leading playground games
  • Reporting any concerns to an adult
  • Taking responsibility for different areas of the playground

Developing Leadership and Responsibility

The Peer Buddies programme provides pupils with opportunities to:

  • Develop confidence and leadership skills
  • Show responsibility and independence
  • Demonstrate kindness, respect and care for others
  • Apply their understanding of school values in a real-life context

Through this role, pupils make a positive contribution to school life and help to create a happy and supportive environment for all.

Linked to Our Golden Threads

Our Peer Buddies programme supports our Golden Threads:

  • Language and Literacy – pupils develop communication skills through listening, supporting others and leading play
  • Resilience and Regulation – pupils learn to manage situations, solve problems and respond calmly to challenges
  • Belonging and Becoming – pupils help others feel included, building a strong sense of community and positive relationships

How to Spot a Peer Buddy

Peer Buddies can be easily identified on the playground. They wear:

  • A bright yellow high-visibility vest
  • A Peer Buddy badge
