Phonics and reading
Our approach to learning phonics in Ashbourne Primary School is through using the Letters and Sounds scheme of work. Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills which consists of six phases. Discreet phonics sessions are taught daily throughout EYFS and KS1 and are fun and multi-sensory to appeal to the different learning styles.
At Ashbourne Primary School we believe that the teaching of reading is an essential part of children’s every day experience in school. We aim to develop a love of reading and have a focus on the teaching of reading across the curriculum. The good quality of texts that children are exposed to is essential. We use the following schemes to support our teaching of reading: Collins Big Cat Phonics, Letters and Sounds, Floppy’s Phonics, Songbird Phonics, ORT Phonics, Collins Big Cat, ORT and Engage Literacy.
