Reading and Phonics

At Ashbourne Primary School, reading is at the heart of all we do! From daily reading, phonics, group sessions and buddy reading, we strive to make reading enjoyable and an intrinsic part of the lives of our young people!

 Poetry Festival – 19th November 2020

Each class learned a poem off by heart for Ashbourne Primary School’s Poetry Festival a part of our whole-school Communication topic. The classes then performed their poem to another class in a special assembly. All of the poems were brilliant, well done everyone!

Live Poet Streaming – Friday 20th October 2020

KS2 took part in a live poet streaming with award winning poet Joshua Seigal!

Scholastic Book Fair – 30th November – 11th December

Our book fair has been a great success! The children enjoyed visiting the book fair with their class and exploring all of the books. We’ve raised an amazing amount for school too! Thanks for all your support.

Well done to our book fair competition winners for their super ‘Get Caught Reading’ photos: Eva in the infants, Ailsa in the juniors and our runner up Barnaby in the infants. Well done to everyone who entered – it was hard to pick a winner!

A wide range of books were available as well as stationary and posters.

Each class got to visit the book fair!

Reading Incentives

At Ashbourne Primary School, all children are encouraged to read at home at least five times a week.

This year, we have a new and exciting reward system for all of the children. If the children read at home at least 5 times a week and a comment is made in the reading diary, they will receive a reading token. This will then go into a prize draw in Friday’s celebration assembly, where one token will be picked out of the gold box at random and the child on the winning ticket will win a BRAND NEW BOOK to keep! We have a huge selection of books for all ages and interests for the children themselves to choose from.

Phonics

Phonics teaching is based on ‘Letter and Sounds’, using a range of other programmes to enhance provision. We have daily letters and sounds sessions for half an hour each morning. The children are regularly assessed and grouped according to the phase they need to be
working on. Take a look at what we have been up to in our Phonics sessions!

Reading Corners

In classes and around school, we have many areas dedicated to promoting reading.

Reading Displays

In all classes we have reading displays to track our reading over the school year.
