Scholastic Book Fair – 17th-24th September 2019

Our book fair has been a great success! Every evening the fair was bustling with children and families searching for a new book and a bargain! We’ve raised an amazing amount for school too! Thanks for all your support.

Well done to our book fair competition winners: Myla in the infants for her super colouring, Abby in the juniors for her brilliant book character design and our runner up Archie in the juniors for his great book character design. Well done to everyone who entered – it was hard to pick a winner!

 National Poetry Day – 3rd October 2019

The theme for National Poetry Day this year was ‘Truth’. These year 6 children led a whole-school assembly where they read out poems relating to the theme of ‘Truth’. We also read poems in our classes during our reading sessions.

Live Author Streaming – Thursday 17th October 2019

KS2 took part in a live author streaming with Julian Clary as he spoke about his new book ‘The Bolds’. This was made even more exciting when Ashbourne Primary School’s questions that we sent in were asked! ‘The Bolds’ books have been a hit and many children are now reading these.

Whole-School Poetry Festival – Friday 22nd November 2019

Each class learned a poem off by heart for Ashbourne Primary School’s Poetry Festival a part of our whole-school Communication topic. The classes then performed their poem to the rest of the school in a special assembly. All of the poems were brilliant, well done everyone!

Book Week – 2nd-6th March 2020

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we have had a Book Week in school! We have celebrated reading in many ways, including class reading swaps, a ‘Get Caught Reading’ competition to win book vouchers, sharing lots of different stories and poems and also reading buddies coming into school.

World Book Day – 7th March 2020

Our whole school celebrated World Book Day by taking part in a Vocabulary Parade! Each child dressed up as a ‘word’. This was a great opportunity to celebrate and learn a wide range of new words and their definitions. In the afternoon, classes came together for their Vocabulary Parade where they got a chance to look at words other children had dressed up as. A great effort was made by all!

Scholastic Book Fair – 13th-19th March 2020

The Book Fair will be arriving in school soon, with hundreds of new children’s books to browse and buy. It will be in school from Friday 13th March until Thursday 19th March.

This year, we are encouraging children to get involved with the ‘Design a National Book Token Competition 2020’ run by the organisers of World Book Day. One lucky winner’s design will be made into a real-life National Book Tokens gift card, to be distributed across bookshops nationwide in time for Christmas!

Library Visits

We have visited Ashbourne Library and had the opportunity to communicate with staff members and borrow a book of our choice and interest each.

Reading Incentives

At Ashbourne Primary School, all children are encouraged to read at home at least five times a week.

This year, we have a new and exciting reward system for all of the children. If the children read at home at least 5 times a week and a comment is made in the reading diary, they will receive a reading token. This will then go into a prize draw in Friday’s celebration assembly, where one token will be picked out of the gold box at random and the child on the winning ticket will win a BRAND NEW BOOK to keep! We have a huge selection of books for all ages and interests for the children themselves to choose from.

Phonics teaching is based on ‘Letter and Sounds’, using a range of other programmes to enhance provision. We have daily letters and sounds sessions for half an hour each morning. The children are regularly assessed and grouped according to the phase they need to be
working on. Take a look at what we have been up to in our Phonics sessions!

Reading Corners

In classes and around school, we have many areas dedicated to promoting reading.

Reading Displays

In all classes we have reading displays to track our reading over the school year.

Summer Reading Challenge 2020

Encourage your children to get silly with this year’s digital Summer Reading Challenge.

Date(s): 5 June – 31 August 2020

The Summer Reading Challenge is the UK’s biggest annual reading promotion for children aged 4 to 11 and this year’s Challenge has gone digital. The Challenge encourages children to keep reading over the summer and this year will launch early as away of helping parents and carers find fun, family-activities,maintain literacy levels and connect children with their peers.

Children and their families will be asked to join the Silly Squad, a group of animals out to have fun and read anything that makes them happy – whether that’s stories, comics, joke books or factual books. The books can be in digital or print format and can either be books that your children have at home or can borrow from Derbyshire Libraries’ e-lending platforms.
