Reading and Phonics
We are really enjoying our daily Phonics sessions where we are beginning to learn some new sounds and words. These are sent home each week with the children to continue to learn at home. Please ensure that you recap these with your children to help consolidate their learning. We are also enjoying sharing our reading books. Please try to read daily with your child and write a comment in their reading record. Thank you!
Spring 2 – Welcome back to school!
We spent the first two weeks of this half term in lockdown. Children continued their learning either in school or via the three live lessons a day on Microsoft Teams. We were all very excited to come back to school on 8th March!
Our first week back was an exciting week. To help with the transition back to school, we named each day to make it as fun as possible for the children.
We played music in our classroom all day. The children enjoyed dancing along!
We enjoyed making chocolate chip muffins and eating them in school!
The weather was a little miserable but that didn’t stop us getting out and splashing in the puddles!
We enjoyed choosing fruit to make our own smoothies!
We wore our PE kits all day and enjoyed lots of fitness activities!
Spring 1 – Lockdown!
This has been a little bit of a strange half term, as we have all been back in lockdown! Children in Reception were either learning in school or at home via Microsoft Teams for our three live lessons a day. Our attendance online has been excellent and the children have made brilliant progress, both at home and in school.
We used a range of stories to help us with our learning this half term, including Lost and Found, The Runaway Iceberg, What the Ladybird Heard and The Little Red Hen. We also looked at the story of The Great Race, to help us learn about Chinese New Year.
Autumn 2 – Let’s Celebrate!
Reception have enjoyed learning about lots of different celebrations including Bonfire Night, Diwali, Remembrance, World Nursery Rhyme Week and Christmas.
We celebrated Bonfire Night in the first week back after half term. The children enjoyed a range of firework activities including painting, decorating biscuits, making breadstick sparkers and singing bonfire songs. The children also produced some fantastic writing to accompany their firework paintings.
We used the story Rama and Sita to help us learn about the celebration of Diwali. The children created some fantastic Rangoli patterns using paint and also outside using chalk. We enjoyed tasting a range of food that is traditionally eaten during Diwali including samosas, onion bhajis, pakoras, poppadoms and mango chutney. Everyone tried all of the food and we had lots of empty plates!
The children all made a split pin poppy to wear on Remembrance Day. We learnt about why we wear Poppies every year on November 11th.
World Nursery Rhyme Week
We enjoyed taking part in World Nursery Rhyme Week. This year, we filmed performances of all of our rhymes and sent them to parents. This year, we performed The Wheels on the Bus, Hickory Dickory Dock, 5 Little Speckled Frogs, Old MacDonald Had a Farm and Miss Polly Had a Dolly.
The children had really missed our on Birthday parties this year, due to the social distancing rules. As part of our Let’s Celebrate! topic, we decided to learn all about Birthdays. The children had a fantastic week, writing lists for a party, writing invitations, making birthday cards, wrapping presents, making cakes and we ended the week with an actual birthday party for our class parrot, Borris!
The children enjoyed putting together our Christmas Show ‘We’re going on a Baby Hunt’. We were unable to to perform this to parents in school, due to the social distancing rules, but we videoed it and sent it to parents. The children all had a speaking part and performed brilliantly. We were so proud of all of the children!
Autumn 1 – I’m Super, I’m Me!
We have all had a wonderful first few weeks in school. The children have all made lots of new friends and have settled into school really well. We have all enjoyed getting to know each other and everyone has had lots of fun!
We used the story ‘The Colour Monster’ to help us learn all about our feelings.
We enjoy practising our fine motor skills with a range of different activities. Our favourite ones have included cutting sausages and buttering bread!
